چکیده

SUMMARY The application of a long stroke isentropic free piston compressor as the energy source for an intermittent M = 6.85 hypersonic wind tunnel is described. The advantages of comparatively long running times of up to 0.5 s and uniform reservoir conditions at up to 90 bar and 600 K are discussed. Particular problems arising from the long stroke compression associated with both viscous flow effects and non-steady wave propagation are discussed and solutions suggested. The theoretical operating principles of long stroke compression tubes are presented and experimental results are given for a pilot facility with compression tube diameter of 0.032 m and length to diameter ratio of 120 and for a full scale facility with corresponding values of 0.11 m and 114.

An Investigation on the Effects of Gas Pressure Drop in Heat Exchangers on Dynamics of a Free Piston Stirling Engine

This paper is devoted to study the effects of pressure drop in heat exchangers on the dynamics of a free piston Stirling engine. First, the dynamic equations governing the pistons as well as the gas pressure equations for hot and cold spaces of the engine are extracted. Then, by substituting the obtained pressure equations into the dynamic relationships the final nonlinear dynamic equations gov...

Demonstration of a Free-Piston Rapid Compression Facility for the Study of High Temperature Combustion Phenomena

A free-piston rapid-compression facility (RCF) has been developed at the University of Michigan (UM) for use in studying high-temperature combustion phenomena, including gasphase combustion synthesis and homogeneous charge compression ignition systems. The facility is designed to rapidly compress a mixture of test gases in a nearly adiabatic process. A range of compression ratios, currently 16 ...

Convergence of Second - Order Schemes for Isentropic Gas Dynamics

Convergence of a second-order shock-capturing scheme for the system of isentropic gas dynamics with L°° initial data is established by analyzing the entropy dissipation measures. This scheme is modified from the classical MUSCL scheme to treat the vacuum problem in gas fluids and to capture local entropy near shock waves. Convergence of this scheme for the piston problem is also discussed.
